Applying for a PhD

The department welcomes PhD applicants interested in any area of Computer Science. Please apply formally. Details and the standard procedure for formal application to the University are here.

You can start your PhD in the department at two specific times of the year. These are September 15th and January 15th. In order to start at a particular time you must apply by the previous entry point. If your application is suitable, you will be invited for interview (in person or by Skype) within two and a half months of your date of application.

Our department also runs specialised MSc by Research alternatives on Ambient Assisted Living, Visual Analytics, and Data Science. Candidates from outside the UK should apply by the same dates as for PhD whilst candidates already based in the UK can also apply by the deadline of the last day of July following the standard procedure.

Apart from applying formally, you may wish to look at our Research and People webpages to identify a suitable research topic (if you don’t have one already) and also a potential supervisor. You can also contact your potential supervisor by email and discuss your proposal before applying.
